Deleting your account and data

Last updated

1. What this page is

This page sets out how to delete an EatWhat account and the data held with it, in one place and without needing the application installed. It restates the deletion rights described in the privacy policy and adds the practical steps.

2. Deleting from the application

Open EatWhat, go to Me, and choose Delete account. You confirm on the device and the deletion is carried out immediately: the account, the records held for it on our servers, any photographs held in cloud backup and the records held on the device are all removed. Nothing further is required of you, and the deletion does not wait on anyone reading a message. If the device is offline the application says so and deletes nothing, so that a failed request cannot destroy the only copy of your records.

3. Requesting deletion without the application

Write to privacy@eatwhat.land, quoting the email address of the Apple or Google account you sign in with. We check that a request comes from the account holder before acting on it, and reply once the deletion is complete. This is the route to use if you have already removed the application from your device.

4. What is deleted

Deletion covers everything held under your account:

  • The account itself, with the email address and display name held for it. For an account that uses Sign in with Apple, the application's authorisation is revoked with Apple before the account is removed, and the account is not removed until Apple confirms the revocation; you may be asked to confirm with Apple once more for this purpose.
  • Diary entries: dishes, notes, reviews, ratings, prices, districts and times.
  • Saved restaurants and the lists holding them.
  • Bills you created, their items, and the shares calculated from them.
  • Any record linking the account to another person or to a group, including a name or hashed telephone number stored for someone without an account.
  • Reports of incorrect restaurant information you filed, and the record of each social-media post you submitted.
  • Photographs and receipt images in cloud backup, and the copies held on the device.
  • Taste profile, notification preferences and usage allowances.

5. What is not deleted, and why

Five things survive deletion, in each case because they are no longer only about you or are not held by us:

  • Settlements you recorded against another person's bill. That ledger records payments between other people and can only be added to, so your name is removed from the entry and the entry stays. Your shares of their bill are deleted outright.
  • Restaurant information corrected or identified from content you submitted. It describes a restaurant, forms part of the restaurant database, and does not identify you.
  • A waitlist entry made on this website, which is held against an email address and not against an account. Ask for it separately at privacy@eatwhat.land.
  • Anything the law requires us to keep, for as long as it requires.
  • An EatWhat Pro subscription. It is billed by the store, and deleting the account does not cancel it: cancel it in the store's subscription settings. The store and RevenueCat keep their own record of the transaction.

6. How long it takes

Deletion from the application takes effect at once, and the account cannot be signed into afterwards. A request by email is acted on as soon as we have checked who it came from. Our database provider may hold routine system backups for a short period after a deletion; nothing is restored from them into the service.
